The actress portraying Mary Parker in the superhero film shares her thoughts on why the movie, which also stars Dakota Johnson, failed to connect with audiences in theaters.

AceShowbiz - Emma Roberts has offered her perspective on the disappointing commercial performance of "Madame Web", in which she portrayed Mary Parker. Despite starring a talented cast including Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, and Isabela Merced, the film received negative reviews and was labeled as "the dumbest movie" by social media users.

Roberts believes that "internet culture" played a significant role in tarnishing the film's reputation. "If it wasn't for everything being made into a joke, I think the reception would've been different," she told Variety. "People just make such a joke out of everything now."

Roberts acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the film industry, stating that "you can't predict" a movie's success or failure. However, she expressed disappointment over the growing "hate culture" towards celebrities and entertainment projects online, particularly on social media.

Despite the film's negative reception, Roberts maintains that she enjoyed working on it and was impressed by the performances of her co-stars and the direction of S.J. Clarkson. She also acknowledged the irony that "things that do well can also seem like they shouldn't have."

While Roberts enjoyed her experience on 'Madame Web,' Dakota Johnson has expressed less enthusiasm, acknowledging that the film's performance was not a surprise to her. Johnson attributed her disappointment to the fact that the project "became a completely different thing" than what she initially signed up for.

"Madame Web" premiered on February 14, 2023, and raked in $100 million worldwide against a production budget of $80 to $100 million. However, its domestic box office debut was disappointing, with only $15.1 million in ticket sales.
