AceShowbiz - Kevin Costner, the patriarch of "Yellowstone", has officially confirmed that he will not return for the second half of the show's fifth and final season. Reflecting on his time on the hit series, Costner expressed his gratitude while acknowledging the need to prioritize other projects.
" 'Yellowstone' was a great moment in my life," said Costner. "I ended up doing five seasons, but with other projects on my plate, it became necessary for me to change my focus."
After months of speculation, Costner announced his departure from "Yellowstone" in an Instagram post in June 2023. He stated that his upcoming epic Western film, "Horizon", required his full attention.
"Horizon: An American Saga" is a four-part Western drama series that Costner directed, co-wrote, and stars in. Set before, during, and after the Civil War, it follows a group of pioneers exploring the American West. The first chapter hit theaters in June 2023, and the remaining chapters are currently in production.
Costner expressed his passion for "Horizon", calling it the "most important film" he has made. He noted that the sheer amount of press he had to do to promote the film had taken its toll on him, but he remained committed to sharing it with the world.
As for his departure from "Yellowstone", Costner maintains a positive relationship with the show's creators. "I make movies and I'm a part of things that I think are gonna be really watchable," he said. "And 'Yellowstone' burst onto the scene and it was a surprise, and it was wonderful and it was good."
Paramount Network released a statement expressing respect for Costner's decision. "Kevin has been a big part of 'Yellowstone's' success," they said. "We respect that Kevin has prioritized his new film series and we wish him the best."
The second half of "Yellowstone's" fifth and final season is set to return on November 10, 2023. While fans will miss Costner's iconic portrayal of John Dutton, his departure marks a new chapter in his career, with "Horizon: An American Saga" poised to cement his legacy as a master storyteller.
