AceShowbiz - During a recent episode of her talk show, Drew Barrymore shared a startling glimpse into her early years. The 49-year-old actress told guest Bobby Cannavale about celebrating her 10th birthday at the iconic Limelight nightclub.
"I went to Limelight, I had my 10th birthday party at Limelight," she said, adding, "I had been going to clubs for three years at that point. I went to Studio 54, I went to Limelight, I went to Nell's. You name it, I was there."
Barrymore, who skyrocketed to fame at seven years old with her role in "E.T.", had a childhood marked by early exposure to drugs and alcohol. The actress has often spoken about how her mother's unconventional parenting style encouraged her party lifestyle.
In a 2018 interview with Norm Macdonald, she explained, "I had a mom, but she was more like my best friend. She was like, 'Do you want to go to school and get bullied all day, or do you want to go to Studio 54?' And I was like, 'Yes, absolutely!' "
Barrymore's early fame and personal life were riddled with challenges, including her parents' divorce. By the age of nine, she had already started abusing drugs and alcohol. Her struggles escalated, leading to stints in rehabilitation for cocaine and alcohol abuse by the time she was 13. At 14, she was legally emancipated from her parents and went on to live on her own in West Hollywood.
Despite her tumultuous start, Barrymore managed to turn her life around. In the late 1990s, she reclaimed the spotlight with memorable performances in films like "The Wedding Singer" and "Never Been Kissed".
She has successfully transitioned into producing, with projects such as the "Charlie's Angels" franchise, and became a talk show host in 2020, interviewing people from various walks of life.
Barrymore's personal life also saw moments of fulfillment. She married Will Kopelman in 2012, and the couple had two daughters, Olive in 2012 and Frankie in 2014. Although they divorced in 2016, Drew continues to prioritize her role as a devoted mother while maintaining a thriving career in acting, producing, and entrepreneurship.
In a 2022 interview, Drew touched upon her complicated relationship with her mother, Jaid Barrymore. Despite their past struggles, she mentioned that they had mended their relationship to some extent. "There's just some peace and respect and maturity there that could not have taken place maybe before. Timing is everything," she said.
Barrymore's journey from a troubled child star to a successful adult in Hollywood is nothing short of remarkable. Her candidness about her past has endeared her to many, offering a testament to resilience and growth.
