Now 80, the actor is overjoyed by the pure happiness his youngest child brings into his life, sharing sweet details about the celebratory event.
De Niro shared with Entertainment Tonight that Gia's birthday party was intimate and heartwarming. "She had a little cake, it was very nice, sweet," he revealed. Reflecting on his daughter's presence, he continued, "Well, she's pure joy, there's nothing about her, there's no judgement, there's no anything, she just is what she is and it's just pure joy for god sakes."
Gia Virginia Chen De Niro, born in April of last year, is De Niro's youngest of seven children, a family he shares with his girlfriend Tiffany Chen. His other children include Drena, 56, and Raphael, 47, with first wife Diahnne Abbott; twins Julian and Aaron, 28, with ex-girlfriend Toukie Smith; and Elliot, 25, and Helen, 12, with ex-wife Grace Hightower. De Niro is also a grandfather of four, though he sadly lost his grandson Leandro, Drena's son, last year at the age of 19.
De Niro cherishes the moments they spend together. "The kids all get a big kick out of her. The grandkids even. She's their aunt, [and] they're about to be teenagers!" he stated. The actor emphasized the joy he feels when their large family gathers. "The fact that they'd all be together is everything to me," he added, noting that their favorite activities include taking trips to warm places.
Acknowledging the challenges and shifts of parenting at different life stages, De Niro reflected on his role in Gia's upbringing. In a conversation with "The Guardian", he shared, "I'm there, I support my girlfriend. But she does the work. And we have help, which is so important." The actor admires the adaptability required when parenting children of various ages, from infants to adults.
