"We were with him, singing Amazing Grace as he left us," she wrote on Instagram. "While there is no tragedy in the death of an 85 year old man who lived a healthy, wonderful life, I know grief is unavoidable, waiting around unexpected corners."

Garner expressed her gratitude for her father's gentle nature and unwavering strength. She fondly recalled his mischievous smile, his role as a patient and loving "girl dad," and his exemplary work ethic, leadership, and faith.

The actress acknowledged the inevitability of grief, but emphasized the importance of gratitude. She expressed her family's appreciation for the medical teams at Charleston Area Medical Center and City of Hope, whose care extended her father's life and allowed him to spend precious time with his loved ones.

Garner praised her father's love of family, his passion for cheering for his beloved Aggies, his enjoyment of captaining a boat, and, most importantly, his 59-year marriage to her mother.
