The original main cast of the 2017 romp is confirmed to return for the sequel, with scribe Tracy Oliver providing updates on the upcoming movie while at Sundance.

AceShowbiz - Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah and Tiffany Haddish may need to pack things up and prepare their passports. The girls are set to reunite for a trip to West Africa in "Girls Trip 2", which has been confirmed in the works.

Tracy Oliver, who wrote the original 2017 romp, provided updates on the sequel while at the Variety Studio presented by Audible at Sundance to promote the second season of her Amazon Prime Video series "Harlem". She said the upcoming movie will likely be set in Ghana.

While Oliver has not submitted her script, she said she had a "definitive 'Girls Trip 2' update. That it's officially happening. I can say that." She also spilled a plot detail, saying that "we're looking to set it in Ghana." She joked that the film's producer Will Packer "might kill me" for sharing TMI.

Oliver further shared that the ladies' trip in "Girls Trip 2" may take part during Afrochella festival, Ghana's premiere cultural and music event whose name borrows from the American flower crown convention Coachella. The event has attracted prominent musical acts from the region, including Beyonce Knowles collaborator Shatte Wale.

A production date has not been set since Oliver has yet to submit her script.

"Girls Trip", directed by Malcolm D. Lee, was a box office hit, grossing a total of $140.9 million worldwide against a net production budget of $20-28 million. It also garnered positive reviews from critics, earning numerous nominations and awards, including four nominations at the 2018 Critics' Choice Movie Awards.

The comedy also became Haddish's breakout role, with her scoring acting nods at the MTV Movie & TV Awards, NAACP Image Awards as well as New York Film Critics Circle Awards. The film follows a group of four friends who go to New Orleans to attend the Essence Music Festival in order to reconnect after a long time.
