Shared by Twitter user @Wumbooty, the clip was taken from a 2004 episode titled "Elmo feels he's treated unfairly by Rocco." Elmo can be seen expressing his frustration with a gray stone named Rocco, which was introduced to the series in the late 1990s.
The red character is asking Gabi (Desiree Casado) if he can have an oatmeal raisin cookie, which is his "favorite." After Gaby informs Elmo she just gave the last cookie to Rocco, Elmo says, "That's OK, Gabi. Elmo will just take this one."
However, when he is about to reach for the cookie, Zoe stops him. She tells him that Rocco already has dibs on the oatmeal raisin cookie. Not having it, Elmo says, "Rocco!?! Rocco's a rock, Zoe! Rocco won't know the difference," to which Zoe responds, "Yes he will! You can't have that cookie, Elmo."
"How? How is Rocco going to eat that cookie, Zoe? Tell Elmo. Rocco doesn't even have a mouth," Elmo frustratingly yells. "Rocco is just a rock. Rocco is not alive."
The tweet surprisingly gained attraction from Internet users as it has almost 73K retweets and 391K likes. It also sparked conversations with 22K quote tweets.
"The Elmo vs Rocko saga is one of the most astounding things I've ever seen. The funniest part is that Elmo's never in the wrong, but he keeps getting scolded for not playing along. And Zoe gaslights the crap out of him in every situation. The birthday party was the worst," one fan commented on the funny episode. "Elmo losing his s**t is the best possible start in 2022," someone else added.
"I get why this is trending because this is legit the angriest I have ever seen Elmo. It's almost like the pandemic is getting to him too (and he doesn't even have lungs!)," another person joked. "Right now we are all Elmo having an oatmeal raisin cookie denied him so that a rock can be placed next to it." After the tweet went viral, Elmo took to his Twitter account to share where he stands with Rocco and Zoe now. "Don't worry everybody! Elmo and Zoe practiced sharing and are still best buds forever! Elmo loves you Zoe! Ha ha ha!" the character wrote on Wednesday, January 5. However, he seemingly hasn't mended his relationship with Rocco as he added, "Elmo doesn't want to talk about Rocco."
In another tweet, Elmo shaded Rocco. He asked, "Has anybody ever seen a rock eat a cookie? Elmo is just curious."
