The popular sertanejo star was on her way to perform a concert when a small aircraft she was aboard crashed, killing her and four others, including her uncle.

AceShowbiz - Brazil is in shock over the loss of one of its young and talented stars. The country's popular pop singer Marilia Mendonca, known as "The Queen of Suffering" for her soulful, angst-filled ballads, has tragically passed away in a plane crash. She was only 26 years old.

Marilia died on Friday, November 5 when a small aircraft she was aboard went down in a rural region of the southeastern state of Minas Gerais in Brazil, according to her public relations firm. The plane had been headed from the city of Goiania to Caratinga to where she was scheduled to perform for a concert on Friday night.

The plane crashed by a waterfall in Piedade de Caratinga, in Vale do Rio Doce, killing the star and four others on board the plane, including her producer Henrique Ribeiro, her uncle who was also her assistant Abicieli Silveira Dias Filho, the pilot and co-pilot of the plane.

There's no immediate word on the circumstances leading to the crash, but an investigation is currently ongoing. A heartbreaking video of the aftermath of the crash shows first responders removing people from the plane.

Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro was one of those who mourned Marilia's death. "The whole country receives in shock the news of the death of the young country singer Marilia Mendonca, one of the greatest artists of her generation, whom, with her unique voice, charisma and music won the affection and admiration of all of us," he said in a statement on Twitter.

Anitta, a funk singer popular in Brazil, tweeted, "I just found out. I can't believe it." She also posted a lengthy tribute on Instagram along with her pictures with the late singer. "Yesterday I told you that I love you, YESTERDAY," she penned. "I can't believe this happened. Why this accident, my God????"

Brazilian football star Neymar was also in disbelief as tweeting, "I refuse to believe it, I refuse."

Marilia was a social media sensation, with 7.8 million followers on Twitter, 22 million on YouTube and more than 38 million on Instagram. She was the most-listened to artist in Brazil on Spotify in 2019 and 2020, according to her PR firm. In 2019, she won the Latin Grammy for best sertanejo album for "Em Todos Os Cantos".
