A source spills that the rift between the Duke of Cambridge and the Duke of Sussex started in 2017 when the former warned his younger brother about moving too fast with his then-girlfriend Meghan Markle.

Several weeks after the Duke of Sussex announced his decision to step down from royal duties, words came out that both the Duke of Cambridge and his younger brother were "relieved" their family drama is finally over.

Amid reports of rifts between the grandsons of Queen Elizabeth II, a family friend admitted to PEOPLE that the two "didn't leave on good terms by any means." Still, the so-called friend was quick to add, "But they are both relieved that it's over." Another palace source further hinted that they will mend their relationship, noting that they have been talking more.

The feud between William and Harry reportedly started in 2017. At the time, the husband of Kate Middleton warned his younger brother that he was moving too fast with Meghan Markle after the latter expressed his desire to marry her after less than a year of dating. The Duke of Sussex was said to be left angry and hurt by his brother's advice.

After tying the knot with Meghan in 2018, Harry made the decision to move out from Kensington Palace, breaking his joint court with William. "It's a shame," said an inside source. "There was power in that unity and great strength in the foursome, but I see why it is happening. There is always that tension: trying to do the PR thing and then realizing that they are just real people. They want their own place and their own things."

In January 2020, Harry took it even further when he announced that he and his wife will step back from their roles as senior members of the royal family and "plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America." On how William took Harry's news, an inside source claimed that he was "distraught and frustrated". The insider added, "The way he sees it, Harry's thrown all the good advice he gave him back in his face."

William and Harry weren't the only ones with tension looming around them. Their wives, Kate and Meghan, allegedly haven't communicated often in recent months. A source told Us Weekly that the two "barely speak" to each other. It was said that Kate was "incredibly hurt too" by Harry and Meghan's exit decision. The source explained, "She acted as a mentor to Harry before Meghan came into the picture and hates seeing her husband so upset."
