AceShowbiz - Katy Berteau, the fiancee of Edward Aschoff, has broken her silence following his death on Christmas Eve, December 24. Making use of the late reporter's social media accounts, the journalist thanked all the people who expressed their condolences and clarified the circumstances that led to his eventual passing.
Alongside a series of photos of Edward, Katy began by saying, "Firstly, I want to say thank you to everyone who has expressed their sympathies, condolences and prayers for me and his family and friends. The outpouring of love, admiration, and gratitude for his life have been so incredible, and have helped me through these last few days."
Katy then went on detailing his last moments as well as clarifying his cause of death, explaining that he was initially diagnosed with multifocal pneumonia. The two attempted to treat it with antibiotics to no avail, leading them to go to emergency room as his condition got worse. "Treatment was started for a presumed diagnosis of HLH, which is an unregulated, over-activation of the immune system that causes it to attack itself and other healthy tissues."
He never lost hope during the treatment, according to Katy. "He kept the doctors and nurses constantly laughing, and always made a point to thank them and tell them what a great job they were doing. He also loved Christmas so much that even from the ICU he was coordinating with my friend about wrapping my presents so I could be surprised."
Unfortunately, Edward passed away within three days since he was admitted to the hospital. A small memorial will be held in Oxford, Mississippi, and a main service will be held in Atlanta.
ESPN previously confirmed Edward's death in a statement, saying that "we are very sorry to have to share the devastating news of the tragic passing of friend and ESPN colleague Edward Aschoff. Our thoughts are with his loved ones, including his fiancee Katy." Many of his friends have also since paid tribute to him on social media.
