In his final Instagram post, the late reporter admitted that 'having pneumonia is pretty terrible,' but he was thankful that he had a fiancee who stayed by his side.

AceShowbiz - Christmas should be a joyous occasion, but the family of Edward Aschoff is in mourning following his death. The ESPN college football reporter, who was known for his deep and compassionate reporting, passed away on his 34th birthday, Tuesday, December 24, after a brief battle with Pneumonia.

ESPN confirmed the sad news through a statement, saying that "we are very sorry to have to share the devastating news of the tragic passing of friend and ESPN colleague Edward Aschoff. Our thought are with his loved ones, including his fiancee Katy." The network didn't reveal the cause of his death, but his friend and fellow sport reporter Steven Abolverdi said in his tribute, "Devastated to hear my friend has passed away after a battle with pneumonia."

He continued, "Ed was a big reason I decided to pursue journalism. He took me under his wing at The Sun and I'm forever grateful. Incredible reporter and an even better person. You will be missed!"

Edward revealed his battle with pneumonia earlier this month, taking to Twitter to ask his followers for advice, "Anyone ever had multifocal (bilateral) pneumonia in their early 30s as some who never gets sick and had a very good immune system? Asking for two friends.. my lungs."

Later on, in his final Instagram post, he thanked his fiancee Katy Berteau for staying by his side amid his battle with the disease. "Having pneumonia is pretty terrible. Like the absolute worst," Edward admitted underneath a photo of Katy relaxing on a boat. "But it helps having this sweet angel taking care of you when even when she's risking getting this soul-crushing illness herself. All the soup, tea and delicious meals have kept me from crawling into a corner and crying the days away."

He went on gushing over her, "Love you, babe. Thanks for putting up with my 5 am coughing fits."
