The movie adapted from popular television show of the same title has beaten the record previously held by Ang Lee's Oscar-winning drama 'Brokeback Mountain'.

AceShowbiz - "Downton Abbey has beaten out "Brokeback Mountain" to become the highest-grossing domestic film debut ever for Focus Feature bosses.

The new movie, based on the hit television show of the same name, has earned $83.5 million at the U.S. box office and $155.1 million globally since its release in the U.S. last month.

"This isn't just a huge achievement for Focus Features, but a huge sign that specialty moviegoers still very much want and are looking to have that theatrical experience (sic)," Focus chairman Peter Kujawski tells Deadline. "Downton offered that and audiences responded in a big way."

The new feat for "Downton Abbey", directed by Michael Engler, broke a 13-year record previously held by "Brokeback Mountain", the 2005 drama from filmmaker Ang Lee that went on to win three Academy Awards.
