But that doesn't mean he won't care about the quality of his music just because he knows it will sell well. Instead, he uses this chance to show that he's not only a pretty boy who can sing and dance.
"Hope World", the first solo project that he put out amid his busy schedule with BTS, received generally critical acclaim from music critics. Emmad Usmani of The 405 gushed, "J-Hope showcases exceptional creativity, genuine personality and a creative cohesive sense of direction over the 20 minutes of the project," noting that he "starts his career off on a high note with Hope World, opening the door for further musical exploration in the future."
On the other hand, its track "Airplane" was featured on Apple Music's "Best of the Week" playlist as another track, "Hope World" was featured on TIME's "5 Songs You Need to Listen to This Week". The publication said of the track, "The lead track is a bouncy and fresh piece of rap-forward pop... J-Hope's infectiously upbeat vibe is hard to miss."
In addition to gaining favor from critics, "Hope World" was a commercial success as it debuted at No. 63 on Billboard 200, earning the highest entry for a solo K-Pop act. It also peaked at No. 20 on Apple Music Top Album charts and at No. 3 on Worldwide Apple Music chart.
Following the success of his debut solo effort was his collaboration with Becky G, "Chicken Noodle Soup". Released on September 27 local time, the track gathered huge success internationally by topping iTunes charts in at least 69 countries while its music video had garnered more than 60 million viewers. The song additionally made him the second Korean solo artist to debut on U.K.'s Official Singles chart after PSY.
