The actress' daughter, Amanda Green, confirmed the sad news via social media on Sunday, September 15.
Newman started her entertainment career at the age of four as part of a stage act mimicking singer Carmen Miranda, and she went on to win a Tony Award for her portrayal of Martha Vail in the musical "Subways Are for Sleeping".
Her other New York stage credits include "Bells Are Ringing", "The Moment When...", "On the Town", "Broadway Bound", and her one-woman musical "The Madwoman of Central Park West", which she co-wrote with Arthur Laurents.
She also enjoyed success on the big and small screen, appearing on TV shows "Murder, She Wrote" and "thirtysomething", and in films like "The Human Stain", "A Price Above Rubies", "Mannequin", and "Picnic".
Newman made several appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and became the first woman to host "The Johnny Carson Show".
She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1983, which she documented in her novel, "Just in Time: Notes From My Life". The disease prompted her to fight for heightened awareness of women's health issues in the entertainment industry, and in 1996 she launched The Phyllis Newman Women's Health Initiative of The Actors' Fund of America.
