AceShowbiz - PBS has unleashed the first trailer for its upcoming non-musical mini series adaptation of "Les Miserables". The new iteration of Victor Hugo's beloved novel is starring Dominic West as Jean Valjean, David Oyelowo as Javert, Lily Collins as Fantine with Adeel Akhtar and Olivia Colman taking the role of Monsieur and Madame Thenardier respectively.

The footage offers fans a better look at the characters as well as glimpses some iconic moments including Valjean's time as a prisoner to his reformation as a respected citizen. Also featured in the trailer is Fantine's big transformation as she's changing her life big time from lovesick young woman to a prostitute.

Colman's Madam Thenandier is also seen showing off her wickedness as she's seen whipping someone so gleefully. Despite all that, at the end of the trailer, it tries to convince the viewers that "where there is love, there is hope."

Written by Andrew Davies ("Pride & Prejudice"), PBS' "Les Miserable" is set against the epic backdrop of France at a time of civil unrest. Directed by Tom Shankland, the six-episode drama tackles the many layers of Valjean and Javert's cat-and-mouse relationship.

While the most popular rendition of Hugo's work undoubtedly remains the 1985 musical, the upcoming mini-series is expected to be more closely to the original version. It will also skip musical interludes.

The series also stars Ellie Bamber as Cosette, Josh O'Connor as Marius and Erin Kellyman as Eponine. Lookout Point's Faith Penhale is executive producing alongside Davies, BBC Studios' Bethan Jones, BBC One's Mona Qureshi and Masterpiece's Rebecca Eaton. Also joining them as executive producers are West and Oyelowo with Chris Carey producing.

"Les Miserables" is slated to arrive sometime in 2019.
