While he has already gotten a permanent resident card, the 'Baby' hitmaker is reported to have applied for U.S. citizenship.

AceShowbiz - Justin Bieber has reportedly applied for U.S. citizenship ahead of his wedding to Hailey Baldwin.

The Canadian star is busy preparing for his impending nuptials to the 21-year-old American model, and according to editors at TMZ, the "Sorry" hitmaker has applied for dual citizenship in the U.S. and Canada.

The singer already has a right to live in America after successfully obtaining a permanent resident card, commonly known as a Green Card.

The 24-year-old will "retain his Canadian citizenship and become an American citizen as well", according to the website.

After becoming engaged over the summer, Justin and Hailey are rumoured to be getting married in a lavish ceremony in Canada. However, they recently sparked rumours they had already wed after they left a marriage licence courthouse in New York City on Thursday, September 13.

Eyewitnesses at the Marriage Bureau at the City Clerk's Office told TMZ that Justin and his bride-to-be Hailey dropped several hints they were already married during their visit, and at one point an emotional Justin broke down in tears.

He was also overheard thanking a court official for keeping his visit low-key, and another eyewitness told the news outlet the couple was making plans to jet out of the country, pointing to a possible last-minute honeymoon.

According to editors at Britain's The Sun newspaper, the pop superstar doesn't have a pre-nuptial agreement in place to protect his fortune - estimated to be more than $220 million (£168 million) - when he ties the knot.

A source told the newspaper that the couple had not informed their managers or publicists about the courthouse visit, and their teams were left trying to get financial agreements in place.

"They didn't tell anyone on their teams what was going on and his people have been frantically trying to get his business affairs and finances in order," they added.

Model Hailey insisted that she and Justin had not yet wed on Friday, tweeting, "I understand where the speculation is coming from, but I'm not married yet!"
