AceShowbiz - Rocker Dave Grohl has created a mammoth 23-minute song for his new mini documentary.

The Foo Fighters frontman is set to release Play, a two-part project all about his passion for making music, on 10 August, and the second half of the film will examine the making of the lengthy new composition, on which Grohl becomes a one-man band and plays seven different instruments to craft and record the title track in real time.

The singer explains he was inspired to take on the tall task by his three young children, who are just discovering their love of instruments.

"Watching my kids start to play music and learn to sing or play drums, it brings me back to the time when I was their age listening to albums, learning from listening...," he shares in a statement, "and when I take my kids to the place where they take their lessons, I see these rooms full of children that are really pushing themselves to figure this out.

"And even now, as a 49-year-old man, I'm still trying to figure it out... it's not something that you ever truly master. You're always chasing the next challenge, and you're always trying to find a way to improve on what you've learned."

The new solo digital project, which Grohl directed with the help his collaborator Mark Monroe, and cinematographer Brandon Trost, also features footage of students at the Join The Band music school in California during practice, and is aimed at inspiring others and promoting music education, reminding people that "just like any kid, the reward is just to PLAY".

Play is Grohl's latest film endeavour - he previously produced and directed 2013 documentary Sound City, exploring the history of the iconic Sound City Studios in Los Angeles, and he and his bandmates also starred in 2014 TV mini-series Sonic Highways, which chronicled the making of the Foo Fighters album of the same name. Grohl directed the project.
