'She was such a beautiful, lovely, great spirit,' the actor says of his late sister-in-law, who committed suicide last month.

AceShowbiz - Actor David Spade grew emotional on TV on Wednesday, July 18, as he recalled happier times with his sister-in-law, designer Kate Spade, following her suicide last month.

The fashion icon, who was married to the comedian's brother Andy, took her own life at her New York City apartment on 5 June, aged 55.

David has paid a few tributes to Kate via social media in the weeks since her untimely passing, but on Wednesday, he blinked away tears as he shared fond memories of his "beautiful" relative in an interview on breakfast show Good Morning America, after co-host Robin Roberts offered her condolences to the grieving family.

Asked how they were coping following Kate's death, the Grown Ups star said, "(We're) as good as we can (sic)."

"It's been very tough, obviously," he continued. "It is just very sweet that everyone came out of the woodwork (to share their condolences)."

David then touched on the impact he witnessed first-hand that his sister-in-law, who he called "Katie", had on friends and his own girlfriends when they knew they would be meeting the designer.

"I remember when we used to hang out, and it's funny, because every girl I was with or anyone who knew they would see Katie, would dress differently; they would bring their A-game...," he smiled. "They'd be like, 'Is Katie coming? Are Andy and Katie gonna be there?' and if they were, it was a whole new wardrobe."

"Katie was very sweet, she knew that they were doing that, and she'd always mention something, say some compliment, and when I say (to them), 'You don't dress up for me...,' they say, 'Yeah, that's her, you're you!'" he quipped. "It sounds like a cut down!"

David concluded the chat by admitting he would start crying if he continued talking about the heartbreaking loss.

"She was such a beautiful, lovely, great spirit that obviously will be missed," he added. "I'll start bawling, but thank you."

Days after Kate's passing, David honoured her memory and raised awareness about the depression which had plagued her for years as he donated $100,000 (£76,600) to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to support those facing similar struggles.
