Akins was up against Ashley Gorley, Hillary Lindsey, Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne for the title.

Akins enjoyed a string of hits as a country singer in the 1990s that included "That Ain't My Truck" and "Don't Get Me Started", while he has written tunes for Jason Aldean, Dustin Lynch and his son.

The ACM Awards ceremony itself took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Sunday night.
