AceShowbiz - NBC has released the first promo for its upcoming "Jesus Christ Superstar Live!". The 40-second video features the first look at the all-star cast, which includes Academy and Grammy Award-winning singer %cJohn Legend%, %cSara Bareilles% and %cAlice Cooper%.
"Easter Sunday. For one night only, it's the live concert event of the greatest story ever told," a voiceover teases in the beginning of the footage as Sara's Mary Magdalena sings her rendition of "I Don't Know How to Love Him". The promo later flashes a scene where John's Jesus is being dragged by several muscular men. Mary, meanwhile, is seen struggling to break free from people who hold her as she tries to save Jesus.
Fans also get a glimpse of Alice as King Herod. The "Poison" hitmaker can be seen donning a gold suit while holding a glass.
Also starring in the upcoming live concert are %cBen Daniels% as Pontius Pilate, %cNorm Lewis% as Caiaphas, %cJason Tam% as Peter, %cJin Ha% as Annas and %cErik Gronwall% as Simon Zealotes.
Helmed by David Leveaux, the live concert follows Jesus Christ in the final week of his life. Alex Rudzinski, who won Emmy Awards for his work on FOX's "Grease Live" and NBC's "Hairspray Live!", joins the live musical as television director.
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, who were behind the success of the original musical, are onboard as executive producers of NBC's modern take on "Jesus Christ Superstar Live". Also serving as executive producers are Marc Platt, Craig Zadan, Neil Meron, Legend, Mike Jackson, Ty Stiklorius and Rudzinski.
The original "Jesus Christ Superstar" premiered on Broadway back in 1971. The musical was nominated for five Tony Awards, one of which was Best Original Score for Lloyd Webber and Rice. The show was later revived in 1977, 2000 and 2012.
"Jesus Christ Superstar Live!" airs on Easter Sunday, April 1 at 8 P.M. on NBC.
