The first trailer for Sony's "Slender Man" turns a meme into nightmare. Debuted by the studio on Wednesday, January 3, the creepy trailer for the upcoming movie is bringing the internet myth to life. In the film, Javier Botet takes on the role of the titular thin, unnaturally tall entity with a featureless head and face, and wearing a black suit.
The approximately 2-and-half-minute video doesn't give much of the movie's plot away, but it features lots of disturbing scenes. It opens with a man saying in voice-over, "Where's my daughter?" as several officers are seen searching for the missing girl in an eerie-looking forest. It then jumps to scenes where the said girl, played by Julia Goldani Telles, is apparently being haunted by the Slender Man.
"Slender Man" starts haunting moviegoers in the United Stares on May 18. It is set in a small town in Massachusetts where four high school girls perform a ritual in an attempt to debunk the lore of Slender Man. When one of the girls goes mysteriously missing, they suspect that she is, in fact, his latest victim.
Directed by French-born filmmaker Sylvain White, whose credits include 2010's "The Losers", "Slender Man" also stars Joey King ("The Conjuring"), Jaz Sinclair ("Paper Towns"), Annalise Basso ("Ouija: Origin of Evil"), Kevin Chapman ("Person of Interest") and Alex Fitzalan.
"Slender Man" is the first fictional movie based on the popular supernatural entity, who was created as a part of an online challenge. Users on the Something Awful forums were asked to make normal photos terrifying, and a man named Eric Knudsen, also known as Victor Surge, created the tall and lanky Slender Man figure.
Since his creation, Slender Man has become a horror phenomenon. His popularity grew even more after various video games and documentaries about the creepy character were created over the past few years. Having been referenced in the video game "Minecraft", he generated video games of his own such as "Slender: The Eight Pages" and "Slender: The Arrival".
However, starting in 2014, a minor moral panic occurred over the Slender Man after readers of his fiction were connected to several violent acts, particularly a near-fatal stabbing of a 12-year-old girl in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
