Serena Williams is more than ready to be back to the tennis court, four months after giving birth to her first child, Alexis Olympia. The 2017 Australian Open winner is set to return on Saturday, December 30, playing an exhibition match against defending French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi.
It will be Serena's first match after almost a year of not playing competitive tennis due to her pregnancy. It also marks her first competitive game since taking home the trophy her record 23rd Grand Slam title at the 2017 Australian Open in January. At that time, she was eight weeks pregnant with her and husband Alexis Ohanian's daughter.
"I am delighted to be returning to the court in Abu Dhabi for the first time since the birth of my daughter in September," Williams said in a statement to ESPN on Sunday, December 24. "The Mubadala World Tennis Championship has long marked the beginning of the men's global tennis season and I am excited and honored to be making my comeback as part of the first women to participate in the event."
The Mubadala World Tennis Championship reportedly will serve as part of Serena's preparation for an Australian Open title defense.
Before hitting the tennis court, the 36-year-old athlete and a mother of one is enjoying the holidays with her 3-month-old daughter. This year will be the first time for her and Alexis Ohanian to celebrate Christmas as a family alongside with the newborn. The tennis champion takes to her Instagram account to share an adorable snap of her and Alexis.
Using a cute flower crown filter, Serena smiles brightly at the camera while holding the little baby in her arm. "Too cute...two dolls," a fan gushes. Similarly, another fans dubs Alexis "pretty," "a little princess" and "a cutie."
Serena and Alexis Ohanian welcomed their baby girl on September 1. Two months later, the couple tied the knot on November 16 at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans.
