It's James Cameron, the creator of 'Terminator', himself who announces the return of Hamilton to the franchise.

AceShowbiz - Linda Hamilton will be back for a new "Terminator" movie. James Cameron, the mastermind behind the sci-fi franchise, has announced the actress' return for a potential reboot that he's developing with Skydance and Paramount.

The filmmaker broke the news at a private event on Tuesday, September 19 celebrating the 33-year-old franchise. "As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it's going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she's become return," he said as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Cameron hopes to once again make a statement on gender roles in action movies with Hamilton's return. "There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys," he noted, "but there isn't an example of that for women."

Hamilton, who is famously known for her portrayal of Sarah Connor in the first "Terminator" film (1984), last starred in a "Terminator" installment in the sequel, "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" (1991) which was directed by Cameron. She provided the voice of Sarah Connor in 2009's "Terminator Salvation".

Last July, Cameron hinted at making a new "Terminator" trilogy. "So I am in discussions with David Ellison, who is the current rights holder globally for the 'Terminator' franchise and the rights in the U.S. market revert to me under U..S copyright law in a year and a half so he and I are talking about what we can do. Right now we are leaning toward doing a three-film arc and reinventing it," he said.

Opening up about the challenges that they would face as the sci-fi franchise is competing against new and more relatable movies, he shared, "The question is - has the franchise run its course or can it be freshened up? Can it still have relevance now where so much of our world is catching up to what was science fiction in the first two films. We live in a world of predator drones and surveillance and big data and emergent AI (artificial intelligence)."

Cameron also revealed that Arnold Schwarzenegger, who starred in the original trilogy and 2015's "Terminator Genisys", would be involved in the new trilogy "to some extent," but the plan would be to introduce new characters to "pass the baton."

Tim Miller is attached to the new installment as a director, while Cameron will write the script.
