Julie Plec announces the impending end of the 'Vampire Diaries' spin-off, a year after making the same decision about the mother show.

AceShowbiz - The upcoming fifth season of "The Originals" will be the last for the series. Creator and showrunner Julie Plec announces the final season of "The Vampire Diaries" spin-off ahead of its panel at San Diego Comic-Con, a year after making the same announcement about the mother show at last year's convention.

"This year, we invite you to help us say goodbye to The Originals, which begins shooting its fifth and final season on Monday," Plec said in a statement posted on Twitter. "Ending a show is always bittersweet, but for me it's a true blessing to be a part of making that choice."

She added, "So please, join us at Comic-Con and as we move ahead with our final season of The Originals. Celebrate with us, cry with us, visit with us, watch us next spring when we air... and know that in a show about an immortal family who believes in 'Always and Forever,' it's never really the end of the story..."

Star Joseph Morgan reacted to the announcement on his own Twitter page. He wrote, "#TheOriginalsS5 will be our last. Thanks for your undying support & I hope you'll keep the darkest corner of your heart reserved for us ;)"

"The Originals" Comic-Con panel will take place Saturday, July 22 at 12 P.M. at the Indigo Ballroom in the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel.

The fifth and final season of the series will air in midseason. Caroline (Candice King) was recently announced to return in the season premiere.
