There are still months to go before the follow-up to "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (2015) arrives in theaters. To help hold fans over during the wait, Disney has released the first part of animated shorts "Star Wars: Forces of Destiny".

The first installment of the new series is titled "Sands of Jakku" and explains what happened just after Rey met BB-8. In the nearly three-minute short, Daisy Ridley returns to voice Rey, while Lupita Nyong'o returns as Maz Kanata.

The series of animated shorts focuses on the female heroes of the beloved saga. The stories will take place within the films that already exist. Other stars of the "Star Wars" franchise, such as Felicity Jones and Ashley Eckstein who play Jyn Erso and Ahsoka Tano respectively, are set to lend their voices in the animated shorts as well.

One of the series writers, Jennifer Muro, recently told Den of Geek about the "Star Wars: Forces of Destiny" campaign. "Going into it, I want to represent everyday heroism and the heroic moments that shape these characters in different ways," Muro said. "Leia would handle a situation one way, Ahsoka another way, Jyn another way. That was the goal all along."

Daisy Ridley will reprise her role as Rey in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" which is set to open in theaters nationwide on December 15.
