Jonathan Frakes, who portrayed Commander William T. Riker on "Star Trek: The Next Generation", is returning to "Star Trek" universe. The actor is tapped to direct an episode of upcoming season 1 of CBS All Access' "Star Trek: Discovery".

"Jonathan Frakes will rejoin the 'Trek' world with 'Discovery'. He's a fantastic guy and great director," writer-producer Gretchen J. Berg told EW. Showrunner Aaron Harberts added, "Our cast is dying to work with him."

Frakes kicked off his directorial gigs with several episodes of "The Next Generation". In "Star Trek" franchise, the actor directed "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", "Star Trek: Voyager" and "Star Trek: First Contact". He also served behind the lens for shows like "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.", "Burn Notice", "Leverage" and "Roswell".

"Star Trek: Discovery" will take place prior to the original "Star Trek" television series. Starring Sonequa Martin-Green, Michelle Yeoh, Doug Jones, Rainn Wilson, James Frain and Jason Isaacs, the series is set to debut through a special broadcast premiere on Sunday, September 24 at 8.30 P.M. on CBS, before moving to its home on CBS All Access.
