Sources say that the reboot is currently in the early stages of development and it may not involve the Wachowskis, who wrote and directed the original version.

AceShowbiz - There will possibly more "The Matrix" on big screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. is currently in the early stages of developing "The Matrix" reboot. The treatment may be written by Zak Penn, while the lead role may land to Michael B. Jordan. However, there is still a lot of things to do before the project is ready to go.

The original "The Matrix" and its sequels, "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions", were written and directed by the Wachowski siblings, but they are reportedly not involved in the potential reboot project at this point. Meanwhile, the original "Matrix" star Keanu Reeves said less than a month ago that he would open to return for another installment, but only if the Wachowskis were involved.

"They would have to write it and direct it. And then we'd see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that'd be weird, but why not?" said Reeves to Yahoo Movies. It remains to be seen, though, whether Reeves will return in the potential reboot.

1999's "The Matrix" is said to be one of the most original films in cinematic history. The movie sees a dystopian future where humans are unaware they live in a simulated reality created by sentient machines. Computer programmer named Neo (Reeves) slowly learns the truth and starts the rebellion against the machines.

"The Matrix", which also starred Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss and Hugo Weaving, became the highest grossing R-rated film in North America back in 1999, earning $463.5 million worldwide. It also nabbed four Oscars which included the accolades for Best Film Editing, Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing and Best Visual Effects.

"The Matrix" sequels, "Reloaded" and "Revolutions", were both released in 2003. Although the sequels weren't much praised like their predecessor, Reeves' deal for both movies made him one of the richest actors in Hollywood.
