The 'Renegade' hitmaker will be the first rapper to be inducted along with Max Martin, Chicago members, Berry Gordy, Kenneth 'Babyface' Edmonds and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

AceShowbiz - Jay-Z writes his way into music history. The Roc Nation founder is set to become the first rapper in the history to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame since it was founded by Johnny Mercer in 1969.

The Jiggman will be inducted as part of 2017 class that includes Max Martin, who holds the distinction of having written or co-written 22 No. 1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100. Other inductees this year include collaborative duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Chicago members, Motown records founder Berry Gordy and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds.

"With our 2017 roster of inductees, the Songwriters Hall of Fame moves definitively into recognizing music creators of the 21st century while continuing to honor the greats of earlier decades," the Hall's co-chairs Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff wrote along with President Linda Moran in a statement. "The combination of contemporary sounds and timeless hits of the past is certain to make for an unforgettable evening."

Following the news, Jay-Z reacted to his induction, tweeting, "By the way, this is a win for US. I remember when rap was said to be a fad. We are now alongside some of the greatest writers in history."

CHIC guitarist Nile Rodgers, who announced the inductees on "CBS This Morning", said that Jay-Z had impacted music industry, particularly hip-hop music, with his massive contributions. "He has changed the way that we listen to music. He's changed the way that we have fun. He's changed the way that we cry," he said.

Rodgers went on saying that the 21-time Grammy winner "was in a space where, even though he's had more pop albums than anyone else, because he did it through rap." Throughout his career, Jay-Z has sold over 100 million records, including his standout singles "Renegade", "Empire State of Mind" featuring Alicia Keys, "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" and "Holy Grail" featuring Justin Timberlake among others.

The Hall's 48th Annual Induction and Awards Dinner will be held on June 15 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. Additional special award honorees will be announced soon.
