George Clooney has come to Meryl Streep's defense after Donald Trump called her out in his Twitter rant. On Monday, January 9, the president-elect took to the social media to brand the 67-year-old actress "one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn't know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes."

Irritated Clooney gave his support to Streep's scathing attack on Trump. "Aren't you supposed to be running the country?" he took aim at the president-elect while speaking at a London reception for Netflix's documentary, "The White Helmets", with wife Amal Clooney. "I didn't vote for him, I don't support him, I don't think he's the right choice."

"At this moment in our lives we have to hope that he doesn't destroy everything. The reality is you have to hope he will do a decent job because if the United States fails, really terrible things happen, so you have to hope that he can," the Academy Award-winning actor continued, before adding, "I don't see any signs of it."

Clooney, who's a supporter of Hillary Clinton, suggested that after a lucky run of previous presidents like Thomas Jefferson, Franklin Pierce, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy, America had got "a little unlucky" with George W. Bush. "I think we're going to be a little unlucky now," the 55-year-old actor added.

Prior to launching the Twitter rant, Trump revealed he was "not surprised" that he became the subject of scathing remarks from "liberal movie people" while responding to Streep's speech. Despite the criticism he received from the Golden Globes stage, the president-to-be believed "plenty of movie and entertainment stars" would attend his upcoming inauguration ceremony.
