"Star Trek: Discovery" has found its female lead in "The Walking Dead" star Sonequa Martin-Green. The actress will play a lieutenant commander on the Discovery, but details about the character are not available yet. Sources have confirmed the news to EW.

Martin-Green is best known for playing the tough pragmatic survivor in Rick Grimes' group, Sasha Williams, on "The Walking Dead". She will continue to serve as a series regular on the hit AMC series. She previously had a recurring role as Courtney Wells on CBS' "The Good Wife".

Original showrunner Bryan Fuller said at the TCA summer press tour in August that the show would have a female lead as a lieutenant commander on a starship. It will also have a gay character, a lieutenant played by Anthony Rapp.

The show has also cast Michelle Yeoh as Captain Georgiou (the Starfleet Captain aboard the Starship Shenzhou), and Doug Jones as Lt. Saru (a Starfleet Science Officer and a new alien species in the Star Trek universe).

Meanwhile, Chris Obi, Shazad Latif and Mary Chieffo have been tapped to play Klingons named T'Kuvma (a leader seeking to unite the Klingon houses), Kol (a Klingon Commanding Officer and protege of T'Kuvma), and L'Rell (the Battle Deck Commander of a Klingon ship) respectively.

"Star Trek: Discovery" will premiere sometime in 2017 on CBS, before moving to CBS All Access.
