"Puff the Magic Dragon" is getting a live-action and animated hybrid movie treatment. Deadline brings the words that the project is in the works at Fox Animation, with "Trolls" helmer Mike Mitchell serving behind the camera.
The movie will be based on the Peter Yarrow, Paul Stookey and Mary Travers folk song of the same name. The lyrics, which were written by Leonard Lipton and Yarrow, are about an ageless dragon named Puff and Jackie Paper, his playmate who loses interest in the imaginary adventures of childhood.
Serving as producers will be Safehouse Pictures partners Tory Tunnell and Joby Harold, and Weed Road's Akiva Goldsman who have secured the rights to the 1962 song. Vanessa Morrison and Nate Hopper are overseeing the project for Fox Animation.
A 30-minute animated TV special of "Puff the Magic Dragon" was released by CBS back in 1978, with Burgess Meredith providing the voice of the titular character. It was followed by two sequels titled "Puff the Magic Dragon in the Land of the Living Lies" and "Puff and the Incredible Mr. Nobody" in 1978 and 1982 respectively.
