Elena Gilbert might be brought back to Mystic Falls to help give closure in the Salvatore brother drama and love triangles.

Elena might return to Mystic Falls. Showrunner Julie Plec and The CW's president Mark Pedowitz confirms that they are in discussions with Nina Dobrev to bring her back for the upcoming last season of "The Vampire Diaries".

"There are discussions going on with Nina, we'd love to have her back," Pedowitz reveals during the TCA. "She was integral for 'The Vampire Diaries'. Hopefully she'll be back, but should it not work out, Julie has planned out a great series finale for fans."

When asked if there will be a time jump to bring back Elena, Plec responds, "[Co-creator] Kevin [Williamson] and I have two very different points of view about flash forwards. He and I will be doing a lot of talking and emotionally battling, in a good way, [to decide] the right path to take this series to an end."
