Fox Searchlight Pictures has released a new trailer for "The Birth of a Nation". In the approximately two-and-a-half minute video, Nat Turner, played by Nate Parker, is being viciously whipped after being caught playing with a white little boy.

"What do you think you are doing?" a man hits Nat's hand when he's handing a doll to the boy, "What? I ask you a question." When the man is trying to hit Nat again, he defends himself. The scene then sees Nat's master Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer) watching his slave being whipped in front of other slaves.

"I pray, you sing a new song," Nat tells his fellow slaves, "Let the high praise of God be in the mouths of the saints, and a two-edged sword in their hand to execute vengeance on the demonic nations. Sing to Him a new song." He and his comrades are then seen taking up arms against their masters as Andra Day's "Rise Up" plays in the background.

"The Birth of a Nation" is Nate's first directorial debut. He's also writing and producing the project. The period drama movie, also starring Aja Naomi King, Jackie Earle Haley, Penelope Ann Miller and Gabrielle Union, is set to hit U.S. theaters on October 7.
