Melissa McCarthy Said She's Not Invited to Appear on 'Gilmore Girls'

While creator Amy Sherman-Palladino thought she would be too busy to appear on the revived Netflix series, the actress revealed the truth.

AceShowbiz - There's apparently a misunderstanding between Melissa McCarthy and "Gilmore Girls" creator Amy Sherman-Palladino. While the latter said she welcomed the very idea of having McCarthy reprise her role on the revived series, the former said she had not received any invitation.

Sherman-Palladino is writing four 90-minute episodes for Netflix, involving the four main characters played by Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Scott Patterson and Kelly Bishop. Questions arose whether Lorelai's loyal friend Sookie St. James would be in the revival, and Sherman-Palladino thought McCarthy would be so busy since her fame took off with 2011's "Bridesmaids".

"She's really f***ing busy," Sherman-Palladino told TVLine. "But the thing I have said [to her team] is, 'Look, if Melissa is available and has an afternoon free, I'll write her a scene. Melissa was one of us. If she has a spare moment to run over [to the set] - even if for just a cameo - we would be totally game. And if it's a last-minute thing, I would write her in and we would figure it out. That's the way we left it."

Explaining Sookie's absence from the current storyline, Sherman-Palladino said, "It was a character we knew we could not count on in terms of story, because [McCarthy] just simply wouldn't have that sort of time to carve out for us. It simply would've been impossible. Planning around her crazypants schedule and her movies and her this and her that and 'Ghostbusters' ... I would just be sobbing in a corner for six months. That would be my whole life. But if her people called me up and said she's free on these particular days or would love to drop by and just be in one scene, we would put her right in."

And Sherman-Palladino's wish as well as fans' dream might come true. McCarthy said in a tweet that it was not her schedule that prevented her from appearing on the show, but rather the no-invitation. "Thanks for the invite, but sadly no one asked me or Sookie to come back to Stars Hollow. Wish them all the best!!" the actress tweeted on early Wednesday, February 3 morning.
