The last episode of the fifth season also includes a reference to the first season by featuring psychic Billie Dean Howard (Sarah Paulson).

AceShowbiz - John (Wes Bentley) may have completed the 10 Commandment murders, but that didn't mean there's no more death on "American Horror Story: Hotel". In the finale airing Wednesday, January 13, Liz (Denis O'Hare) died at the hands of The Countess (Lady GaGa). The Countess actually fulfilled Liz's wish to stay in the hotel with her chosen family after she was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer.

Earlier in the episode, Liz and Iris (Kathy Bates) struggled to lure more guests to make sure the Cortez hotel make it to August 23, 2026, the date the building would be determined a historical landmark. Thus, the building would never be destroyed and the ghosts would have a home forever. In her attempt to achieve this goal, Iris introduced Sally to social media and since she now figured out how to connect with the world, Sally (Sarah Paulson) kicked her drug habit.

Meanwhile, Liz was missing Tristan (Finn Wittrock), so Iris asked psychic Billie Dean Howard (Paulson) from the show's first season to contact his spirit. Tristan didn't want to talk to Liz, but when she died, he appeared to tell Liz he loved her and they kissed.

Years later in 2022, Billie now had annual TV special shot at the hotel. John appeared to show Billie the Devil's Night soiree. It turned out that John had been shot and died right in front of the hotel, and he could only reunite with his family once a year on October 30.
