The follow-up to 'Sicario' is rumored to center on the mysterious assassin character played by the Academy Award-winning actor.

Following a successful debut on Friday, September 18, drama thriller "Sicario" will get a sequel. According to Variety, Lionsgate is developing "Sicario 2" that will center on Benicio Del Toro's mysterious hitman.

Del Toro plays Alejandro, an assassin who teams up with FBI agent Kate Macer (Emily Blunt) in an attempt to take down a Mexican drug lord. Moviemaker Denis Villeneuve seems to return to director's chair although it's still in early development and it's not confirmed yet.

"Before the release of this movie, I was talking to Denis and I said what happened to this character?" said Patrick Wachsberger, co-chair of the studio's motion picture group. "Where is Benicio going?"

According to Wachsberger, Lionsgate is planning an Oscar campaign. "This movie has multiple Oscar potential - best movie, best director, best cinematography, best music, and, of course, the actors," he said. "All of the characters feel real."

Wachsberger also praised Blunt's performance. "She is totally credible," he said. "You end the movie wondering what's going to happen? What happen to her character? Is she becoming a wolf?" he wondered.

"Sicario" debuted to a satisfying $401,288 from just six theaters last weekend. It will expand to 65 locations next weekend, before getting a wide U.S. release on October 2.
