Ray has come to the realization that she isn't meant to be a girl and has decided to transition from female to male.

AceShowbiz - Elle Fanning is a transgender teen in the first trailer for drama "About Ray". It gives a glimpse at the emotional turmoil as he is dealing with his gender identity. Trying to gain weight as well as muscle and standing up to his bully are among the footage shown.
Ray gets support from his single mother, Maggie (Naomi Watts), but not from his biological father (Tate Donovan). "There is no Ramona anymore, it's just Ray," Maggie says as she tries to get her ex to give his legal consent for Ray's transition.
Dolly (Susan Sarandon), Ray's lesbian grandmother, is also having a hard time accepting that she now has a grandson. "Why can't she be a lesbian?" Dolly asks, to which Maggie frustratingly replies, "Because she's not a lesbian, mom. She's a boy."
The movie is due in limited theaters across the U.S. on September 18.
