The actress playing the title character on the original series says, 'I'd love it to happen one day but it's still in the wishful thinking stage.'

AceShowbiz - "Xena: Warrior Princess" could join the list of TV shows that get a reboot treatment. Words are, NBC and NBC Universal International are planning to reboot the cult series starring Lucy Lawless as the title warrior.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project is still in very early stages of development and original executive producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi will be involved in it. A search for a writer is currently underway and it's unclear if Lawless will return for the new show, which is dubbed a "modern reboot."

Sources say "the new Xena would have to have the charisma and charm of Lawless and the smarts of" Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) from "The Hunger Games" as producers are "looking for a sophisticated and smart superhero for a new generation."

However, Lawless told fans not to hope too much as she said the news was just a rumor. She tweeted on Monday, July 20, "Sorry, friends! news of a #Xena reboot is just a rumor. I'd love it to happen one day but it's still in the wishful thinking stage."

Previously at Comic-Con, the actress expressed her interest in a possible "Xena" reboot. "I've been pitching that, actually," she told Den of Geek. "The fans really do want that, and I've met some people who've crowdfunded some things, and I'm just like, 'Why don't we just do that?' "

"Xena: Warrior Princess" aired in syndication from 1995 through 2001.
