Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara were caught touching Todd Haynes' butt in front of many photographers during a photo call. The trio were attending a press conference for their film, "Carol", on Sunday, May 17 at the Cannes International Film Festival.

Realizing their silly action, Blanchett and Mara managed to keep straight faces. However, director Haynes couldn't hide his shocked expression. The director made a spontaneous response to the awkward moment by placing a hand on each of the actresses' backside as the trio shared a giggle.

Blanchet looked gorgeous in a sheer black top and fringe skirt with a black jacket draped over her shoulder. Meanwhile, her co-star, Mara, sizzled in a long sleeve white lace dress with a white waist belt.

The stars have earned rave reviews from critics for their performances after it was premiered at Cannes on Saturday, May 16. "Carol" is an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's 1952 lesbian romance novel entitled "The Price of Salt". It is about an illicit relationship between a wealthy married woman (Blanchett) and a New York City department store clerk (Mara) in the 1950s.

The actresses said that they weren't shy or awkward performing the love scenes of the film. "I'm nude quite often, so it wasn't a big deal for me," Mara said. And Blanchett noted that a lot of strangers saw her naked when she gave birth. "It's an important scene," Blanchett said.
