Idris Elba Breaks 'Flying Mile' Record in a Bentley

The 'Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom' star takes it to Pendine Sands, Wales to break the record set by Sir Malcolm Campbell 88 years ago.

AceShowbiz - Idris Elba just broke the historic "Flying Mile" U.K. land speed record. He drove a Bentley Continental GT Speed and hit a top speed of 180.361 mph, breaking the existing record of 174.8 mph set by Sir Malcolm Campbell in 1927 in his Napier-Campbell Blue Bird.

The "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" actor said, "I'm absolutely elated to have broken the 'Flying Mile' at Pendine Sands. It's an honour to have taken on the challenge, and to successfully follow in the footsteps of the illustrious Sir Malcolm Campbell."

Elba beat the 88-year-old record on the beach of Pendine Sands in south Wales. His average speed was 180, but his top speed was 186. It's filmed as part of a Discovery Channel miniseries entitled "Idris Elba: No Limits" which will air in July.
