Beanie Sigel was seriously wounded during a physical row Friday, December 5 at a home in Pleasantville, New Jersey. The rapper was taken to the Trauma Unit at the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City after being shot in the stomach.

Police reportedly chased a car suspected to be related to the violent incident and took an unidentified man into custody. The motive of the shooting remains unclear, but the altercation left another man injured although he refused medical treatment.

Pleasantville police Chief Jose Ruiz told the Associated Press that the two men might have some "some type of family relationship." "Apparently, there was a struggle of some type, which led to Mr. Grant being shot and that is all we have at this point," the officer explained.

Although the injuries were potentially life-threatening, Sigel was reportedly awake Friday afternoon after surgery. His lawyer believed the rapper was not the target of the Friday shooting. According to his family, he had just taken his children to school when it happened.

Sigel was released from prison in August after spending two years in jail for tax evasion. He had been on home-confinement since September 25 and was supposed to be released from the halfway house on Saturday. He had his monitoring bracelet on at the time of the shooting.

Beanie Sigel was once close to Jay-Z, but they became estranged after the former was sentenced in 2004 to one year in prison on weapon charges. During his career at the Roc-A-Fella, Sigel led rap collective State Property. The group's duo, known as Young Gunz, was got a Grammy nomination for "Can't Stop, Won't Stop". Sigel himself scored several top-five albums.
