The sequel to the 1994 comedy movie rules the domestic chart on its debut weekend with an estimated $38.1 million.

AceShowbiz - "Dumb and Dumber To" has outsmarted "Big Hero 6". The sequel starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, which came 20 years after the first movie was released in 1994, has proven to be a good cure for nostalgia as it drew the most audience this weekend, raking in an estimated $38.1 million in its first week on domestic box office.

The movie didn't get much love from critics, "but it's the strong brand that drew people and the nostalgia," says Rentrak analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "Harry and Lloyd hit the big screen 20 years ago and it was so over the top, the original achieved cult status. This was pure escapism and it was huge."

Trailing close behind the comedy movie is last week's champion "Big Hero 6" which added approximately $36 million for a total domestic gross of $111.6 million after two weeks playing in theaters. Now taking the runner-up place, the Disney animated pic fell a meager 36|percent| from its opening cume.

The critically lauded "Interstellar" also fell one place to No. 3 with an estimated $29.2 in its second week. Drama movie "Beyond the Lights" is the only other newcomer which made it into the top 10 this week with approximately $6.5 million. Meanwhile, "Gone Girl" fell two places to No. 5 with an estimated $4.6 million.

Overall, Dergarabedian says, "The weekend was a perfect harmony of blockbusters and smaller more intimate awards season films."
