Rock star Iggy Pop is teaming up with Italian horror director Dario Argento to make "The Sandman" film. A crowdfunding for the movie is launched by producers Daniela Tully, Jeff Rogers and Rob Heydon to raise $250,000 via the Indiegogo site.
Argento's version of "Sandman" is based on author E.T.A. Hoffmann's 1816 short story "Der Sandmann". The titular character steals the eyes of sleep-deprived children and feeds them to his own children on the moon.
David Tully wrote the script, giving the film a 21st century set and the dark forests of Germany. It centers on a young man named Nathan who, as a child, had a brush with the masked serial killer who uses lethally jagged melon spoon to claim the victims' eyes. Nathan killed that Sandman one Christmas Eve, after the villain killed the young man's mother.
"I was thrilled to read the script, because I recognized right away, this one was written for me," Argento said. "I'm so excited that for the first time in my career, I will be able to involve my fans so early in the process and have them play an integral role in my next film. Also, working with Iggy Pop is amazing!"
Pop is set to play the villain. "If I could play the Sandman for him it would make my life complete," he said. "I hope I have not just written my own epitaph." According to Variety, the film will also include references to Argento's horror films such as "Suspira" and "Deep Red".
