Wirkola who directed the first film says he won't return for the sequel because he has 'been lately attached to a few more things.'

AceShowbiz - A new director is needed for the upcoming "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" sequel. Tommy Wirkola who directed and penned the first film confirmed in an interview with Fangoria that he will not reprise his role behind the lens for the upcoming second installment.

"I've just decided to not direct 'Hansel & Gretel 2'," he said. "I have been lately attached to a few more things, it's just a matter of time and priorities. I did 'Dead Snow 1', then 'Hansel & Gretel 1', and then 'Dead Snow 2'. I want to do something a little bit different now and not just do sequels."

Although he steps down from his position as the director, Wirkola still returns to the scriptwriting duty. "I did write the script and I hope to be involved in it. But yeah, I won't be directing it," so he said.

The script was complete, he previously said, and it's now up to the studio to move forward with the project. Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton who headlined the first movie haven't been signed on for "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters 2", but the former is game to return for the sequel.
