Fox's adaptation of Mark Miller's comic book "Starlight" has found its writer, The Hollywood Reporter learns. Gary Whitta who is currently taking a crack at one of the "Star Wars" standalone films to be directed by Gareth Edwards ("Godzilla") is hired to pen the new superhero movie.

"Starlight" is described as a mash-up of "Flash Gordon meets the Dark Knight." Released earlier this year, the comic book centers on a space hero Duke McQueen who is forced to come out of his retirement and save the universe once again.

Forty years ago, Duke saved an alien world from destruction. Back on earth, nobody believed his story. Now his kids are grown, his wife has passed on, and life has little to offer. Until the day a strange boy from the world he once saved makes an appearance, coaxing Duke to join him on one last adventure.

Simon Kinberg ("X-Men") is on board to produce the upcoming film adaptation.
