The project, titled 'Skull Island', was first introduced at the San Diego Comic-Con where Legendary unleashed a short teaser.

Back in July, Legendary made a surprise announcement at the San Diego Comic-Con that they were developing a King Kong spin-off. It has just been revealed that "Thor" actor Tom Hiddleston will star in the movie with "The Kings of Summer" director Jordan Vogt-Roberts on the helm.

"Skull Island" is a big-budget origin movie about King Kong which explores the mysterious island that became its home and other terrifying prehistoric creatures. "Godzilla" scribe Max Borenstein is hired to pen the script, prompting rumors that Legendary had the intention to develop a Godzilla and King Kong crossover film.

"Previous works have touched on the island, but staying on and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions," Legendary said in a previous statement.

The teaser that they released during the Comic-Con panel showed a roiling sea that led to a dense jungle. A skull-shaped rock came into view with King Kong standing tall, roaring and beating his chest. Universal Pictures, which co-finances and distributes Legendary's films, will release "Skulll Island" in U.S. theaters November 4, 2016.
