A lonely high school girl, with dark secrets of her own, may be the key to catching the murderer.

A chilling trailer for "The Town That Dreaded Sundown" has been released. The horror remake is produced by Ryan Murphy and Jason Blum, starring Addison Timlin as the girl who becomes the boogeyman's messenger.

"Do you remember anything about the murders?" Timlin asked her grandma. "He was the Boogeyman, they said. Can't catch the Boogeyman. Can't kill the Boogeyman," grandma responded. "Before that summer, everybody would leave their doors unlocked, and after the summer if you saw a stranger you'd run the other way."

Timlin then broke the law by going into a remote place after the dark with her boyfriend. The boogeyman watched over them before killing the boyfriend. The story is based on Charles B. Pierce's 1976 cult pic about real-life murders committed along the Texas-Arkansas border in 1946. The new story picks up 65 years after the "moonlight murders" when the terror has returned.

The film is written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and helmed by first-time feature director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon. It will have its premiere at the Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas on September 18 before opening in limited theaters in the U.S. on October 16.
