Comic-Con: 'American Horror Story: Freak Show' Reveals Characters

Jessica Lange plays Elsa Mars who is the head proprietor of the freak show, while Kathy Bates portrays the ex-wife of Michael Chiklis' Wendell Del Toredo.
New tidbits from "American Horror Story: Freak Show" were revealed during the show's panel at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend. Executive producer Tim Minear, who was joined by stars Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Angela Bassett, Evan Peters and Michael Chiklis at the event, announced the character names.

While details of the roles are still kept secret, at least relationships between some of the characters are no longer mysteries. Jessica Lange, as revealed before, is the head proprietor of the freak show named Elsa Mars. Paulson has also been announced to play conjoined twins Bette and Dot Tattler.

Chiklis, who is a new addition to the cast, will portray Wendell Del Toredo, a strongman who is now married to Bassett's Desiree Dupree. Bates will star as Ethel Darling who is Wendell's ex-wife, and Peters will play Jimmy, Ethel's son. Roberts plays a woman named Maggie.

Minear also confirmed the casting of "Body of Proof" and "The Americans" alumna John Carroll Lynch, who will play one of the core villains that he claimed rivaled Rubber Man from season 1, Bloody Face from "Asylum" and Minotaur of "Coven". He teased that the big bad would "scare the s**t out of you."

Minear went on gushing about the fourth installment of the horror anthology series which will be set in the 1950s in Jupiter, Florida, "I can tell you this, which is not much: It's the best season so far. It's not like the first three seasons."

Paulson, meanwhile, talked about the challenge playing twins. "There are about 22 people working on every single shot that I do," she shared. "How it will all come together I do not know, but it's one of the hardest things I've ever done. I can't just shoot all of Bette, then all of Dot. I feel like Sybil. I should call Sally Field and get some tips."

"Freak Show" is scheduled to debut this fall on FX. Frances Conroy, Wes Bentley and Finn Wittrock are also among the cast members.
