'Sons of Anarchy' Creator on Emmy Snub: Emmys Are Not a Valid Qualifier of Talent

Kurt Sutter states after his show was snubbed in Emmy nominations list, 'I still suffer the emotional and spiritual depletion ... when 'Sons of Anarchy' gets zero nominations in all major categories.'

AceShowbiz - Kurt Sutter has expressed his feelings after "Sons of Anarchy" failed to score a nomination in any major categories for this year's Primetime Emmy Awards. In a lengthy statement posted on NikkiFinke.com, the show's creator expresses his disappointment for being snubbed for the umpteenth time.

"There's a certain cachet that comes with being snubbed in all major categories. Repeatedly," he begins writing. "It's the 'Lucci Factor'. You gain more fame, respect and admiration the more your efforts are ignored. If you win gracefully, you're famous. If you lose loudly, you're infamous. I, unfortunately, fall into the later category."

Claiming that he's still able to restain himself from calling "anyone at AMC a money-w***ing, talentless c**t," he adds, "Honestly - and I actually believe this - I think we'd drop viewers if 'Sons of Anarchy' were ever nominated for an Emmy. My bombastic outlaw-a**hole reputation would be tarnished. Or rather, untarnished."

Though so, it doesn't mean that he doesn't want to win an Emmy. "I absolutely do [want to win an Emmy]. More than anything," he admits. "Any artist who tells you they don't want to be acknowledged and awarded by their peers is a fat f***ing liar."

"But here's the rub," he continues his rant, "I know on an intellectual level that the Emmys are not and have never been a valid qualifier of talent. I know the people who vote are busy industry people with limited time and departmental biases (Costumers, Production Designers, Makeup, etc.). Throw in the fact that studios and networks spend millions on Emmy campaigns to influence votes, and you end up with a very flawed system where most folks rush to fill in circles for friends and shows they've seen once or twice or 'heard' were really good."

Still, Sutter says that he suffers "the emotional and spiritual depletion every July when 'Sons of Anarchy' gets zero nominations in all major categories. While other f***ing shows that ran out of story three seasons ago, still get tagged to step up to the show."

"SOA" actually received a nomination for Original Song, but Sutter says "music is a creative layer that lives above, beyond and in spite of this show." For other shows which landed Emmy nods, he says, "God bless them all. I wish them abundance and success. They deserve all the love and praise the universe gives them."

On how he will handle this when he attends the Emmy ceremony on August 25, he shares, "I'd be just another smiling douchebag in a new suit, pretending to give a s**t on the red carpet. Actually... taking a s**t on the red carpet, that's something that might drop as a 'real and honest moment'."

Sutter had actually predicted Emmy snub for "SOA" before the nominations were announced on early Thursday, July 10. He tweeted on Wednesday night, "Writing a little missive about SOA's Emmy snub for @NikkiFinke tomorrow. Guessing it'll be at least a 4-c***er, with a touch of 'blow me'."
