Screenwriter Roberto Orci is paving his way to make a directorial debut and his first job is to carry a franchise as big as "Star Trek". It has been reported that the "Transformers" scribe is in talks to replace JJ Abrams to direct Paramount's "Star Trek 3".
Abrams directed the first two "Star Trek" movies but had optioned not to return to the third installment in order to direct Disney's "Star Wars Episode 7". He announced last September, "It's a little bittersweet. But, I will say that I'm going to be producing the movie. It definitely feels like the right time to let someone come in and do their own thing. I certainly don't want someone to come in and try to do what I would have done."
Orci, together with Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof wrote "Star Trek" and "Star Trek Into Darkness", but has since professionally split company with Kurtzman. Per Deadline, Orci has been lobbying hard to direct the third film and he got the full support from Paramount's partner Skydance Productions. However, Paramount "needed convincing," the news outlet reported.
"Star Trek 3" is yet to have a release date or an official title. It is expected to be released in 2016 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the original TV series.
